San Diego Political Podcast BowlersDesk.com 4-15-14: Tijuana Tuesday | Political Podcast with Vicente Calderon from TijuanaPress.com Tijuana is the elephant in the room for San Diego news. Tijuana is an ignored city in San Diego news circles. Only stories that are sensational make even the back pages here in the states. And they almost always seem to be about violence. I don’t think it because of a systemic racism. No it’s just about the dollars. The rating companies don’t give San Diego media the viewer numbers for their news product in Tijuana. So there is no way to monetize covering news just across the boarder. If the Nielsen rating company would give Tijuana number with San Diego numbers I’m sure we’d cover the city and people of Tijuana a lot more in San Diego. However what that has done is opened the door to smaller news producers like the one i talked to for this BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast. Journalist Vicente Calderon and I have known each other for years. He was an anchor in Los Angeles and left that to start a Tijuana based news website TijuanaPress.com He and his team follow all the top stories in Tijuana. He is also the go-to-guy for Tijuana news. He often field produces for American and other international media when they need someone. He’s covered all of what we think about as stereotypical Tijuana stories … prison riots, drug murders and cartel battles. However he and his team cover the stories that don’t get coverage in American media like political debates and even the odd art opening. We talk about media freedom and making a living as a journalist in Tijuana. In the middle of the interview small drone started flying over our heads, file that under weird. But it shows how similar our two countries approaches to gathering news are. I know the TV station I work is defiantly looking at using a drone to gather news, not using it yet but I’m sure its coming. I think this is a fascinating podcast and I hope you enjoy it. BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with Brad Kierkegaard, religious studies professor from San Diego State University. And no he’s not a relation of the famous 19th century philosopher. We talked about the Pope. The Pope is making waves inside and outside the church. His views on what the Catholic Church should be focused on. The poor over birth control. His criticisms of global capitalism. He’s even come out in favor of breastfeeding, though we don’t talk about that. I waited as long as I did after Pope Francis came into power because I wanted him to have to time to do stuff before I started to judge him. Brad has some great points about this new Pope. I particularly like his comparison to Pope Emeritus Benedict. We sat in the little chapel behind the alter at Saint Joseph’s, San Diego’s Cathedral. Brad has this great way of couching his criticisms in positivity. It’s a fascinating and interesting chat. I asked myself what San Diego political issue is both under talked about and very important to the mayor’s race? The answer for me is Barrio Logan zoning regulations. Now before you yawn think about this … While at first blush zoning regulation don’t seem that exciting, these rules determine what you can do with your land, what business are allowed in a community, even how many people are allowed to live in a neighborhood. So zoning has a direct and very important impact on your life. Barrio Logan is a community created when the 5 freeway was built, bisecting Logan Heights. Under much protest and cries the freeway went through. Then the Coronado Bridge was built and sparking loud protests witch eventually lead to the creation of Chicano Park. Now the community there wants to create some industrial free zones. There is a lot of industry in Barrio Logan, lots of heavy industry. The most notable is the maritime industries. They pay a lot in tax, employ lots of people, and are very important to the city outside of the barrio. This issue is making its way into mayoral election politics is some very interesting ways. The issue has a racial component that could be part of the reason the next mayor wins or why his opponent loses. Barrio Logan was born fighting. And the people from there don’t back down, they are used to long fights. This time on the Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast I sat down with Georgette Gomez from the Environmental Health Coalition. She’s a Barrio Logan native. She has a lot of interesting things to say about her almost decade long fight to make changes to the Barrio Logan zoning rules. Agree or not you’ve got to respect her zeal and commitment. BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with me Matthew Bowler and San Diego’s Political Professor Ric Epps This time we are on board the official Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior. The original was blown up by the French equivalent to the CIA. So Greenpeace just built another one. This time it has a very interesting and avant garde design. The ship has a traditional engine, an electric engine, and two sails. However the sails don’t fly from a traditional mast. Green Pease is hopping the new design they’re using will work as a proof of concept showing cargo ship builders that using sails are viable for cargo vessels. It’s a very cool and interesting design defiantly worth a serious look.

[youtube=http://youtu.be/33a9Ht5EzE4]

We talked to her Captain Capitan Joel Stewart

[youtube=http://youtu.be/t9IQYyFh43M]

And Green Pease Oceans Campaigner Casson Trenor. It was a fascinating hour. We talked about the Greenpeace ship that was seized by the Russian military and the 30 activists that were arrested. We talked about one ironic aspect to global warming and Arctic oil drilling. We talked about Bumble Bee Tuna and read parts of a letter from the San Diego Bumble Bee CEO. Of course I know you’ve got an opinion and your dyeing to share it. Jump on your soapbox by jumping on ours call (619) 663-4531 and leaving use a message … ask a question … make your point and maybe we’ll use it in our next BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast And now the BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with special guests from Greenpeace. … And please remember to post, re-post, and share.

For this Bowler’s Desk political podcast I met up with Rory Pendergast. Rory is campaigning hard for the underdog in San Diego’s mayoral special election. We sat in the back of David Alvarez's tiny Encanto campaign office ... Lots of kids, community members, and part activist excited to hit the streets and campaign for the dark horse candidate. No one thought his campaign would gain the momentum it has. Last UT San Diego poll has him neck and neck with Nathan Fletcher. Who is going to show up at the polls? Who can rally their people? Will the traditional San Diego Democrat get votes in San Diego? Who is going to show up? How did Alvarez gain so much ground in such a short time? It’s interesting to me because Alvarez was such an underdog and now he’s a contender. Hello and welcome to another San Diego Political Podcast. I’m Matthew Bowler from BowlersDesk.com. This time Ric Epps and I sat down with the President of the San Diego Police Officers Association, Brian Marvel. We spent about an hour chatting about San Diego Police Department and there roll in our community. Their mayoral endorsement and why they endorsed whom they did. And how the POA see’s itself when compared to other labor organizations, like the Service Employee International Union (SEIU). Also we spent a fair amount of time on pensions. I have to apologize for a technical issue. My mic died on me just as started recording … I did lots to fix it and I think its OK. Brian and Ric both sound perfect. However I have a bit of an echo. I think its totally listenable but I just wanted to let you know so you wont think there’s something wrong with you. Brian was great. He’s super friendly and like almost all the cops I’ve met, a great conversationalist. So San Diego’s POA You be the judge. Remember if you want to jump on your political soapbox you can do that by jumping on ours, call the BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast Soapbox and leave a message … 619-663-4531 Please listen, share, and re-tweet!

Welcome to another Political Podcast from BowlersDesk.com. We have a different sort of show for you today. This time we talk about our country and how it keeps secrets. I sat down with Chase Madar civil rights lawyer, Slate.com blogger, Blogger for the Nation and now author of “The Passion of Bradley Manning”. Chase is an advocate for whistle blowers. He wants everyone to know how our country creates secrets and what it means to be a whistleblower. Chase thinks Manning and Snowden a leaked info they believed important for the country to know. Chase points out that while what Manning leaked amounted to the largest leak of classified documents ever, it still is only 1% of one year of data. Chase isn’t advocating total transparency in my opinion, he does what a change in the way our system of secret works. It was a very interesting hour and well worth the beer and tortas I bribed him with. Agree or not Chase makes some very interesting points. You be the judge. Remember if you want to jump on your political soapbox you can do that by jumping on ours, call the BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast Soapbox and leave a message … 619-663-4531 Please listen, share, and re-tweet!
